Violin Books – Suzuki Books 1 – 6

Heather Broadbent

Suzuki violin books are a wonderful teaching tool for any violin student. I use the Suzuki violin books 1 – 6. These books can be bought with their corresponding cds and I would highly suggest buying them together. The cds are great to study the music before learning how to play. It is a great practice to watch the music while listening to the cd. In Suzuki books 1-3 it is also a great practice to do what I call “airbowing” with the cd. While listening to the cd and watching the music you bow without the violin to practice the bowing in the piece. This also reinforces the rhythms of the piece that is being worked. It is not necesary to have the music in front of you all the time when listening to the cd. It is very beneficial to listen to the cd in the car, while sleeping, doing homework, cooking dinner, exercising, etc. Listening is a great way to practice without the violin and this can be applied to all music that is being studied not just to Suzuki pieces.

In my studio, I supplement the Suzuki violin books with Solos for Young violinists 1 – 6 as well. This edition also comes with cds and are great to be used in the same ways as discussed above. Along with these books for solos, I teach shifting and other techniques through various violin etude books consisting of Whistler’s Introduction to the Position, Josephine Trott’s Melodious Doublestops, Wohlfahrt, and various Sevcik volumes.

After Suzuki Book 6, I start to introduce individual pieces and not in a collection.
